What city in Virginia has the most culture that you've noticed?

For me I enjoyed a trip to Charlottesville but that is different compared to actually living there I suppose. I just wanted to get your opinions.

When you ask "Which City in Virginia has the most culture"? I assume it relates to Art, Music, Theatre.

Richmond, Roanoke & Norfolk would be my top picks.

I have noticed cities that have "old money" and a sizable affluent class generally give money to the Arts.

BTW, Norfolks culture scene got better since the Norfolk Southern Railroad left Roanoke and headquartered there. They are very generous benefactors to the Arts.

College cities such as Charlottesville, Blacksburg, Lynchburg are gaining in the culture scene.

Also, the size of a City doesn't necessarily mean that community is necessarily a big fan of culture. Look at large southern cities which will remain nameless where football is King.

Also, there is something about "mountain cities & towns" which draw "culture snobs".

It's not quite in VA - but one small town full of culture is Shepherdstown, WV (in the eastern panhandle - home to Shepherd Univ).

I passed through there recently and I noticed it has gotten the attention of the "Washington elite".

Definitely not. Not unless a rudeness culture counts.

Many probably won't agree with this one, but one of the most cultured little towns I have ever seen is Abingdon, Virginia, near Bristol and the Tri-Cities region of Southwest Virginian and Northeast Tennessee. The State Theatre of Virginia, the "Barter Theater", is there, and simply has that refined "feel" about the place.
