Duh - Norfolk is much more than just a "town." It's the original hub of a metropolitan area of over a million people. See Norfolk, Virginia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

While both you and "Alanboy395" are both right, as long as people think..

*Norfolk is a Navy TOWN.

*"The little seaside town of Virginia Beach" ( heard this many of times on both CNN and FOX News )

*Chesapeake? Well to many that is a name of an old local kids show host on Baltimore TV...

Then there was this on the old Password TV show..

The password is "Virginia"

Dionne Warwick: "..sorry I can't think of a name of any city in Virginia"

Burt Convy: "..well Dionne there is Fairfax, Richmond, Norfolk..."

Dom Deluise: "..hey don't forget Virginia Beach !!! "

Dionne Warwick: "..thats right..I have been to Richmond and Norfolk many of times...they are both NICE LITTLE TOWNS !!!"

...no matter how big Hampton Roads, Richmond, Roanoke gets...there will always be those out there who will consider our cities...well towns

I like the "town" moniker. I always call Richmond a town even though it has a dense CBD and thriving neighborhoods. Town to me means it still retains the laid back character of the old days when people still waved to each other, sat on front porches, and drove courteously. It still applies to this City for the most part. And considering how small we are compared to places like DC or NYC, i guess it's not all that inaccurate. To sum up, we shouldn't treat the word as an insult.. us "townies" have the best of both worlds

Yes I agree. The word town doesnt bother me. I guess because I know that we're far from it and when people come here with the notion we are small towns, they are always surprised at how massive the area is and how many people there are here.

But we really are towns compared to other MAJOR cities.
