Husband is thinking of taking a job in Norfolk, VA (by the Intl Airport). I've been trying to educate myself on the best areas to live. We would like to live in a nice area- we have kids, and a Labrador...so a yard would be nice.
Looking around, it seems that we would have to live a little ways away to be able to get a nice yard. We are outdoorsy people... So, I came across Cape Charles. My husband's commute would be 52 mins according to google if we lived there. Pretty far...But I keep reading about the bad traffic in town. So, would he end up having to drive an hour anyway?
Are we nuts for thinking of Cape Charles? it just seems we can get a better house and we'd have a more outdoor lifestyle. Is this correct? or am I going in the wrong direction? Thanks!!

Are you sure you want to pay $20 or $30 or whatever the round-trip bridge toll is, and drive for an hour, every single time you do any significant shopping or childrens activities ? I would think that would get old very fast. I don't think there's much at all to do in Cape Charles.

Are you sure you want to pay a very expensive toll, and drive an hour each way, every single time you take your children to any significant shopping or youth activities ? I would think that would get old very fast. But let's see what others think, who know the Cape Charles area better than me and what's there.

I think the toll is now $12 a day if you return within 24 hours.

I've thought about taking a job out there (I actually live in VA Beach) but don't want to drive that bridge/tunnel every day. It's kinda intimidating, driving through a tunnel in what is basically the Atlantic Ocean with oncoming trucks coming at you going 55mph. And the cost with the toll is just too prohibitive (which is good because it keeps the rural character of that area alive). And it will take you at least a good hour to get from Norfolk to Cape Charles, definitely more if you are working a traditional 9-5 in downtown Norfolk.

But it is really really nice out there, very rural, very quiet. But it's not exactly cheap anymore - I don't know what you are looking for in terms of a yard (1+ acres?) but anything under that you would be able to find on the southside somewhere too.

Good luck

we recently moved to Cape Charles from Ohio. Yes Cape Charles is beauitful very quiet life living . Don't like the toll bridge, but if you go further north you will find everything you need. I like Cape Charles beach verses Virginia Beach cause it less people and you can really enjoy it.I love Cape Charles. But your right about one thing there is not a whole lot bussiness wise there. But there is a walmart about 30 minutes from Cape Charles. And so far seems like everyone we have talked to is very nice and very sociable.

I have been over/through the Bay bridge & tunnel complex one-way, one time. I cannot imagine doing this twice a day, every work day. It is two lanes in those tunnels. Other people have mentioned the monetary costs. My nerves could not take this on a daily basis. With that said, I know that there are folks who commute daily over this bridge.

Check out the website for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Complex:

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Homepage

Can you come visit before lining up housing? I would think you can find what you are looking for without being on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

This thread's 100 yrs old but my g/f's parents mentioned Cape Chas. as a retirement destination. Since they're not pc savvy, I'd told them I'd ask as its last up north winter, that they'd like to deal with. My g/f & I also wondered this re VA's eastern shore & how moderate winter is, & how affordable renting is?

Ok, thx for any insight here from folks living down there. l told them just for fun, I'd ask re current retirement living & weather/cost of liv etc. there. Anyone still live there that'd affirm if it'd be a good retirement place & w/ moderate winters? They're up north yet & tired of winters, as this last cold snap has convinced them that this may be last winter they want.
