I have a possible job opportunity in Alexandria Virginia. I am really considering relocating my family from Las Vegas. I would like to know the best place to live with the great schools, reasonable rents, and not too bad of a commute into alexandria. Does anyone have any suggestions?

In that area, you won't find reaonaable rents - your annual rent will probably equal the purchase price of a foreclosure in Vegas these days

I feel your pain. I am moving out of Ely, NV (3-4 hours north of vegas) to MD or VA....haven't decided yet, but the decision is tough. It's hard to move when you don't know the area and folks all have their own opinion of what paradise is. I'm so confused right now.... Good luck with your choice and just pray that God will lead u in the right direction. That's all that's left for our family to do b/c we don't know a thing about either state. We are orginally from FL so anything away from this wicked winter in Ely will be a blessing!

"Reasonable" is a relative term. What type of house would you prefer? What is your housing budget? What would be the maximum amount of time you would want to spend commuting?

"The best place to live" is also very broad. What are you looking for in a community?

You might want to post this in the Northern VA forum. Comparing to what you may be more familiar with out West, the COL in Alexandria is similar to Orange County or the San Franciso Bay area, except that rents tend to be more in line with home values (meaning in VA they're higher for a house of a given value). To get something like what you're paying in Las Vegas, you'd have to live quite a long ways away in areas that aren't the greatest.

Thank you for the insight. It looks like we are leaning towards WoodBridge. The rents in the area is comparable to my current mortgage payments here in Las Vegas.

Good luck to you to. I found a few friend who live in the area. I have one that lives in Maryland because they work in DC. She told me there are jobs there. I accepted the position in VA and looking forward to the move. I have been on the west coast for so long it is going to be a change. The good thing is I am moving first to make sure this is right for us. I understand the cost of living is high, but the cost of living in LV is pretty high too. Good luck to you and your family.

In the DC Metro area, the price to rent and/or buy a house seems to directly correlate to how bad your commute is. For an inner suburb that is a short commute to DC, you will pay a lot. But if you work in, say, Leesburg (which is 35 miles outside DC), then you can find some decent places that are pretty affordable nearby. So if your job opportunity is in Alexandria and you were looking to buy, you could purchase a decent three bedroom, two bath house (SFH) for around $600,000 to $700,000 and have a 10 minute commute to work. Or you could purchase a very similar house in Woodbridge (20 miles south) for around $200,000 and have a 70 minute commute to work. Rental prices work along the same lines. It's tough having to make a sacrifice like this. You just need to pick which one you are willing to make.

Thanks for the information. We drove in the traffic today and commuting is not an option for us. Thank you for the information
