Couple with young children, 10 and 6 years old, is planning to move to Maryland. Can you tell me the best places to live considering:
- Safety
- Good schools
- Affordable housing (will probably start by renting)
- Attractions for children
- Grocery stores
- Work possibilities for me and my husband
- Metro
A friend told me Gaithersburg. Does it meet my criterias?
Thanks for helping me.

I live in Gaithersburg ATM... it is all of that... which is why I'm here... but it depends on where you live and work. If NIH, Gburg can't be beat.... unless Rockville, but I've found that place expensive. If you work further into DC, I might look for something else...

For example, I start a new position and I can't see driving 15 minutes to the metro, find parking, then take a metro ride for 50 minutes (when running smoothly)... mmm, no.

Affordable is a subjective term... What does that mean to you?

Affordable is rare in Montgomery County. It's one of the richest counties in the entire USA. Stay away from PG County. High crime and corruption.
Fairfax, VA. is very nice but like Montgomery County, is very expensive to live. Your only alternative to finding affordable housing is in the outer suburbs (MD - Charles, Calvert, Howard and St. Mary's counties).
Good luck in your search.
