Berkeley of the East for Takoma Park is right. I am on the DC side of Takoma Park area...but it is easily one of the most liberal towns in the US and frequently mentioned in articles. I love it though, it reminds me of my favorite towns in Vermont and the Pacific Northwest.
I also think it is one of the few places with a legitimately laid back atmosphere in the Beltway. It is a quality I think is hard to find in the area.

I believe the OP is just looking at municipalities. Fort Washington and Brandywine wouldn't fit the bill.

Also want to add that although Hyattsville is more dense, Bowie is still the most populous though.
