Thanks much!

I'll have to consider some judicious trimming. My house has given me a new appreciation for pre-war materials and craftmanship, but it has also given me a new appreciation of modern conveniences and modern design.

I could start a thread on living in MD vs VA after I've had the house a little longer, but too many of those discussions seem to degenerate into emotional rants for me to be excited about it. Also, I live in PG County, and those threads get even worse. I love my old cottage on the water, but I have pretty much given up on trying to convince people on Citydata that I don't live in a crime-ridden apartment complex.
Haha! Yeah, amen to that. So much drama from some people.

I remember now--you're the guy with the house on the water. I remember you talking about that. You made a real good case for PG.

Your house sounds fantastic. We almost bought Cape with a slate roof, actually (and would have, but it's a long story. Negotiations basically broke down.) The wife and I love old houses. Honestly, I can't imagine living in a post-WWII house unless we were to win the lottery and build one from scratch out of plaster, slate, and fieldstone. This is my dream: Luck into becoming a billionaire, then travel the country knocking down McMansions and replacing them with 3/2 Cape Cods/Colonials/Spanish Colonials/Tudors with bulletproof "no alterations" covenants.

Gardenweb is a great forum for home repair stuff, by the way.

Thanks for the Gardenweb recommendation. I'll check it out.

I like old houses and materials, too. My house was built out of brick and granite that was recycled from an old brewery that had just been knocked down in Alexandria in the 1930s.
