The region probably could get away with not building any new facilities for the games since between DC and Baltimore, all the necessary venues are probably in place. But the region (especially Baltimore) has infrastructure problems; Baltimore's light rail line can't even adequately handle the crowds for Ravens and Orioles games - trains are often infrequent and therefore jammed during the hours before and after games. What makes anyone think Baltimore's single subway line and slow-as-molasses light rail system could efficiently move the huge crowds that would come for the Olympics?

DC is in better shape transit wise, as its rail system carries close to a million people each day. Hopefully the Silver Line extension to Dulles Airport would be finished by then.

The area has the facilities, but not the infrastructure to move people between them, especially using public transit. Remember they are spread out over the metro area. Im guessing the epicenter would be in MD around the stadiums, but even then people would have to be able to get from Baltimore, to DC, to various parts of the VA metro area, to various parts of MD metro area.

It would need HUGE upgrades.

People like to use Atlanta as an example. DC is MUCH bigger than ATL when you account for their respective sizes. The DC metro area is much bigger in population and size than the ATL MSA. This is only a 2012 comparison. COmpare 2012 DC to 90s Atlanta and the difference gets much bigger. The cost of land and getting things done in DC is also higher.

It is very possible to pull off. They just need to spend the money. Right now the federal and state government arent being generous. Without the proper funding it would be a disaster. Keep in mind every state, district, town, city, municipality, etc is going to fight over the money for their own pet projects. You also have to have the proper planning, and in this case it would between 2 states, and the federal district. Than you would have to battle all the NIMBY folks, Unions, organized communities, and individuals.

Then there is going to be security. Boy is there going to be security. DC is already on lockdown. With the tens of thousands of foreigners visiting for an international event that last days it is going to be like North Korea.
