Are there any reasonable commuting routes from Silver Spring to Northern Virginia? To keep things simple, let's pretend I live in Silver Spring and just got a job in McLean/Reston. Will I hate my life with the commute? I'm willing to travel ~45 minutes to an hour.

How about Silver Spring to Alexandria?

I think my brother goes through DC on some route of side-roads but I don't know what they are. He says it "keeps moving" better than the Beltway.

Would you be willing to contact him to find the route and time it takes him? Sounds like what I'd be looking for.

I sent him an email, will let you know. He goes from the northern part of SS to McLean.

There's quite a few ways that you can use, like, for example, 16th St., Georgia Ave, N. Capitol St., Beach Dr, etc...

What about taking the metro to some point in VA and buying a $1000 junk car to take you from the metro station into work? At least you could be doing something other than books-on-CD during the drive. My biggest frustration is not moving or moving 20mph or less. An hour going 60mph IMO doesn't cause nearly the stress for me as sitting at an intersection for 2 light cycles before moving or slowly crawling along 16th St/Georgia Ave. It's painful when it seems even the people walking are making better progress (never mind the bikers).

I just realized that you said "McLean/Reston". 495 is the best way in that case. Going through DC makes no sense.

for you, its about a 45 min commute, on a good day. With an accident, all bets are off. Once you get to McLean, its no picnic either. That is one busy place, every major intersection is being worked on.

i used to drive from Silver Spring/Wheaton to McLean on the Beltway, and considered it barely tolerable at 45 minutes. When my job moved out to Reston, that was the straw that broke my back, and I looked for another job. The extra 20-25 minutes out to Reston or Herndon was too much. You also have to consider the cost of the toll road to Reston.
