Hey all I'm looking for an apartment around the $1300 range. I was initially looking in temple hills but after talking with some people on here it may not be the best move for us (girlfriend and I).

Is hyattsville a safe area? Also is it feasible to find an apartment in that area within my price range? All help is appreciated, this forum has been great so far!

The "Arts District" has more expensive luxury apartments. But if you look around the metro stops in Hyattsville, you should find some places in your price range.

It would help is you said exactly where your were going to be working.

I am a bit confused, as in your previous post you said you budget was up to $1500/ month. I encourage you to spend the larger figure, as the $1300 will put you in the run-down or sketchy apartment category.

Agreed. I am the one who brought up the arts district. Hadn't paid too-too much to the budget she laid down, or more importantly, how expensive this area was. It's definitely not within the reach of a $1300/month budget. Unfortunately, it won't be easy finding many places that area great which also have a good public transit connection.

Yeah our max is $1500, $1300 being the more preferred range.

We found a couple that look to be promising so I guess we'll see how it looks in person. Going down next week to check a bunch of places out.

Issue is I won't be moving down with her for a couple months (finishing my job at current location). So till then she's restricted by her pay. Once I'm down there we'll be looking in a higher price range.

Regarding safety, all I can do is check Spotcrime.com . Around the Hyattsville metro stop and Prince George Plaza, there are several thefts and one burglary, but no violent crime. Mostly it would be shoplifting from stores. So, as long as you don't do risky things like wander around alone at night, I'd consider it safe.

I've lived near the Hyattsville Arts District for 13 years (since before there WAS a Hyattsville Arts District). You can rent an apartment (maybe even a tiny small house) in the City of Hyattsville for $1500. It won't be fancy, but it will be safe. I'm trying to convince a friend to move here from Alexandria, so I've been asking around about the rental markets.

I've lived in Hyattsville for a long time now (we bought our house in 2003) and really have enjoyed watching the area blossom around us. We like the "Arts District" growth; we're in walking distance of all that. The other day my husband and I ate at Tara Thai and then popped into the organic market on the corner for some quick groceries. If I were commuting by metro into the city every day however, I might be more tempted to live in the apartments by the PG Plaza Metro rather than the Arts district. Parking at Metro is getting pricey. My husband usually biked to metro (yes, a few years ago, one of his bike wheels was stolen from PG Plaza... but generally I feel that the area is safe). We now both work in Northern VA (still live in Hyattsville), so we commute together by car. Sadly, it is much cheaper to drive together than take mass transit. I feel very safe in Hyattsville. Not sure about the rental market. However, I do know that you can rent a single family house in Hyattsville for under $2K. A friend of mine relocated from San Diego to a house across the street from me. It is an older home (which is par for the course in Hyattsville) but nice enough. Great curb appeal and a nice layout. She pays $1600/month.
