Hello,

Is it true that there is quite a significant price difference of f.e. a new Ford Explorer at a dealer in Gaithersburg and f.e. Glen Burie? Is it worth shopping around between dealers? No fix prices? Anyone with experience with this?

Thanks,

In my experience in buying a new Buick, all the dealers have the same list price (AKA, the manufacturers suggested retail price or MSRP).

Where they differ is the degree of willingness to negotiate prices. For example, if it is the end of a month and they have a quote to meet, they will negotiate more off the MSRP.

If Glen Burnie has a lower-income population than Gaithersburg, the locals may be less willing to buy Explorers and the dealers are more willing to cut the MSRP. (In my opinion, a Gaithersburg dealer will be less willing to negotiate price on an expensive car.)

In short, it is worth shopping around. But it is also worth waiting for end-of-month specials.

In addition, also remember that many dealerships, even if they have different names, now are under one ownership umbrella.

An example would be the Ford dealerships here in Southern MD. They may be named Prince Frederick, Waldorf, Indian Head, Leonardtown and Upper Marlboro Ford but they are all owned by the same group. The same goes for most of the Dodge dealerships here. Same group that owns the Fords as a matter of fact.

An advantage is the amount of inventory they have between them.

Shop around and play the dealers against each other.
