Nobody is wants distance learning. It was a disaster during COVID- not the same as distance work, which has been a huge success (eliminate commutes, home comforts, easy collaboration, etc). Some inefficiencies of course but a net positive. College students are getting more than an education, they are getting an experience. And colleges benefit from students being engaged on and around campus - creates more loyal alum with a stronger connection to the school and area.

True. But that "experience" comes at a cost and is expensive. Having to relocate and pay expensive room&board or market-rate student housing probably isn't an option for many. And to be honest, the student loan industry is propping up the high cost of higher education. Many are taking out loans for that experience. Without loans, I doubt many students can afford the college experience that was more affordable 40 years ago.

UMGC does show that distance learning is possible. Perhaps a hybrid schedule of distance and in-person learning makes more sense. But I was just wondering if the popularity of remote work will filter down to remote learning for most students as room & board costs continue to rise making living on or near campus cost prohibitive.

Also, I would think remote learning benefits the university as you can still get revenue per student without having to fead them or house them on a campus with limited space for additional housing.

I'm amazed at how there is still a housing shortage after sooo many new beds have come online in the past 10 years. Rt. 1. has literally been transformed with so much new student housing with more being built to meet demand? Makes it seem like UMD was only housing 50% of its underclassmen that qualified for room&board 10 years ago.

It would be nice to know what other university students live along RT. 1. I assume it is not required that residents attend UMD to lease one of these apartments.

Wow...after Campus Village closes, that'll leave College Park with only one liquor store: the Village Pump. The first to go was Lasicks followed by Number 1. Town Hall and College Park Liquors will close soon.

I suspect no one wants to pay $11K (in-state tuition and fees) for distance learning at UMCP.

It looks like an apartment project approved several years ago, Branchville Crossing, is back in play to be under construction in early 2024. It will now be a five-story, 51-unit building, rather than an eight-story, 81-unit building.

Will it still be affordable housing? That seems to be the theme with these latest developments with non-student housing sans the Aster.

Yes, about 1/2 of the units will be for renters at or below 30% of AMI (area mean income) while the other 1/2 will be for renters at or below 60% of AMI,

Some good news. The Iron Rooster is applying for a liquor license for their upcoming College Park restaurant.

Awesome! That should not be an issue. *crosses fingers* Kapnos served alcohol. I would assume they held that license in reserve for the next restauranteur to take that spot.
