I got stopped by this ununoformed, unmarked Gaithersburg police officer (supposedly) with a K9 dog in the back. The guy jams on the brakes, hops out of the vehicle, and goes "Your driving skills pretty much suck. Now, I can write this up or you can take care of it". I was so confused as to what he was talking about because I had a good following distance, and I was going 5 over the speed limit, but this is Gaithersburg... people don't drive 35 on straight-a-ways here! And if I did I would get my a** run off the road! So, in my eyes, I didn't see anything wrong... sometimes I think cops have had bad childhoods where they've been picked on (I know this to be true with 95% of the cops that I know... and I worked at a jail for a while), so they take it out on other people who are following within proper distance and really not speeding. It just shocked me because he was supposed to be a PUBLIC SERVANT but he was more or less harassing the public with verbal slurs and comments that would get me fired in a heartbeat if I did that... except it's his word against mine and I'm not the one in uniform or with a badge...

ehs: Definitely BETHESDA/ DOWNCOUNTY
I drove really carefully thru that intersection this weekend after reading your post. Downcounty (Bethesda, etc) has a lot more traffic cameras. So,if one accidently speeds or runs over the line at a stop, u may get a surprise ticket by mail. So Thanks for the heads up. Can see how that would be annoying.

On a side note: The Montgomery County Police are the main police force and I have no issue w/ them, usually very helpful. There r a lot of smaller supplemental police forces serving local hamlets.

Never had a problem in Gaithersburg so I can not comment directly to MDguySC. Sorry you had a bum experience. Usually the county cops r fine. They r the major professional law enforcment players. In Mont Co Md, each small muncipality has the option of supplementing w/ a local/local force. Perhaps that is why some encounter a different rub in Gaithersburg and Rockville at times. Have heard there is a difference.

I've been stopped so many times in rockville! They pull me over and request me to pop the hood and to get out. Especially on the weekends it seems, I usually get stopped at or near Barnes & Nobles/Giant on the pike. It gets really annoying. And they've never found anything wrong with the car or me!

Yup, I remember being stopped in Rockville. They did a walk around after seeing a tail light out, thought I would be dragged away. All worked out, no issue. Amazing, how nervous one gets when pulled over. Rockville and Tacoma Park (sp?) in Montgomery County Md have their own suplimental police depts. They r very busy bees.

Gaithersburg police is really dumb, stupid and looking for something to do. I got a ticket at 4.10AM new year's eve for parking with my left side to the curb. I couldn't believe you can even get a ticket for something like that. Again it was raining all that night. Besides that, it was on a side street in a purely residential area (sioux lane). The bastard wrote me a $50 ticket in the rain at 4 in the morning. please tell me if this is not ridiculous. i really want to go to court even though it is a distance (live in baltimore city). But what exactly will be my defense aside that the offense and timing of the ticket make it seriously unfair. Has anyone ever gotten a ticket for parking with their left side to the curb?

In Laurel, they write tickets for this all the time. We live on a small residential street and our neighbor's father parks that way all the time. We warned him before to not do it. He got away with it many times, but in the last month he got ticketed twice for it. Some people just don't learn.
