Sorry but $1500 may not be enough to live in a "safe and nice place" especially in Downtown DC. You may be able to rent out an English basement if you look on Craigslist. Is there a specific reason why you don't want to stay in the VA or MD suburbs? You may be able to find something in your price range that is nice and safe in Alexandria, VA or maybe Silver Spring or Greenbelt, MD.

Anything off Wisconsin Avenue NW is going to be safe.

how close? Walking distance to a job in downtown DC in a safe area for a family on your budget isnt really realistic.

Yes if just being close to work is a priority then you might want to consider an older hi-rise in west Alexandria or south Arlington off Columbia Pike. On the Maryland side consider Silver Spring. I know you said you didn't want to live in Virginia or Maryland. These are places that are away from the metro but have good bus services to the Pentagon metro which is where a lot of area buses meet. You can get downtown in 45 minutes by bus and it'll be a lot more for your money. Unfortunately your price point will barely get you a 1 bedroom let alone a 2 bedroom for the baby.

Maryland Ave is a street that is miles long. Saying your job is on a street doesn't really tell anyone where it is.

Is your job in a Federal office building on Maryland Ave S.W. (downtown L'enfant Plaza area, very easily accessed by metrorail lines from both Arlington and Alexandria)

--- or is it on Maryland Ave N.E. (a slightly more outlying, more residential area, not really served by metrorail) ?

Luxury 1 bedroom apartment huh? I once checked one of those out on Mass Ave that was within your budget and the "hardwood floors" were actually hardwood-colored vinyl. The carpet looked like the kind of carpet you find at those cheap motels you patronize to hook up with your mistress. Oh and the bathroom? Awful vomit pink with cracked tile and fixtures that belong in an inner city elementary school.

But hey, whatever floats your boat.
