I've searched all over the internet and City Data and am thoroughly confused. I plan on moving to the DC area in the next two months. I have a car that I plan on keeping. If I move to DC and transfer my car registration, I will need to pay the excise tax of 6%, right? Are there any other car taxes I would need to pay in DC?

Also, what are the car taxes in MD and VA? I know that VA has annual property taxes, while DC and MD do not.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

VA charges you personal tax for your car at the end of the year. But DC charges you income tax. MD has higher tax than DC and VA. MD is a really disgusting place, as far as the tax they put on everything.

At the end of the day, just pick somewhere you want to live (VA is better, if you don't work at DC. If you do, just find a place in DC, it'll save you the traffic headache, and commute fee which all sort of equals out. I have pets, so that's why I live in VA. Plus the booze is cheaper, and there are more stores for me to pick here), then just cough up the money. You're not going to win in DMV.

If you owned that car greater than a year, you might not have to pay the tax in VA. I'm referring to sales tax, or whatever it's called. The personal property tax is a different tax.

While completely off-topic, I need to disagree. The liquor stores in DC are way cheaper than the state run stores in VA.
