Not trying to push you to a certain direction, but keep in mind you are new to the city (I assume without family or friends already). A group house would also give you the beginnings of a network of friends or at least someone to turn to in an emergency. Remember that $900 for a bedroom probably does not include utilities so that's another $100 or so. You could always do a group house for a year, save some $$ and check out other areas that you might like better. Daughter intended to only stay one year but was saving so much money, she stayed two. It allowed her to build a nice nest egg.
LynchburgLover, I did look into renting a room/group house after you mentioned it. I wanted to see some of the options. Although I highly doubt I'll go in that direction for a few reasons. Also, after rooming with people in college I really would prefer to have a place to myself. I'm willing to pay a little more for peace of mind.
