Lakeland, Florida-based supermarket Publix is reported to possibly enter the District of Columbia in the future.

Currently operating 1,111 stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, Publix is entering Virginia with two stores opening in late 2017 and early 2018 respectively.

Do you work for Publix or something, you're always posting about them.

Great store. Would love to see it put those abominations known as Safeway and Giant on the run.

No, I do not work for Publix or any food retailer. I have a knowledge of and follow supermarkets in the southeastern United States.

Giant-Landover is one of five banners that may divest stores in the Ahold Delhaize merger. Food Lion, Hannaford, Martin's, and Stop & Shop are the others.

Albertson's three Florida stores are converting to Safeway, and may likely be in the Eastern Division.

Most of Virginia, excluding southwest Virginia, will be in Publix's Charlotte Division. Southwest Virginia will be the Atlanta Division. Expansion into the District of Columbia, northern Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia could spur a new division.

Safeway and Giant could use the competition. They're already feeling the heat with low-price grocers like Aldi and Lidl moving into the market.

While living in Sofl, Publix was the last place I shopped. That place is the most expensive and so can you imagine it being in Nova or DC. Forget about it...

Publix makes the BEST italian sub. That was my dinner on several occasions during my 10-day road trip through the Keys. I miss that sub. Haven't found one that compares in DC.

Aldi and Lidl are limited assortment/discount grocers, not supermarket. They will cater to price conscientious customers.

Safeway and Giant-Landover will have additional competition indeed.

Publix is not expensive. First, it does not have a card program. It does not incur expenses creating and maintaining a program, producing cards, constantly changing price labels to reflect card prices, etc. Second, its prices are on par or lower than Walmart and Winn-Dixie. Winn-Dixie has increased its prices and has closed many stores.
