Re Question #2, GW is in Foggy Bottom. No safety concerns there other than the fact that it is in a city. State Department to the south, Kennedy Center to the southwest, West End (very nice) and Embassy Row to the north, WorldBank/IMF to the east. There aren't many problems there.
Re the Great Falls property, I'm also surprised that such would be available. As an added bonus, it's just a hop, skip, and a jump down Springvale Road to L'Auberge Chez François, one of the best restaurants in the entire DC area. It will however still be a good haul from there into downtown DC...certainly over an hour, but likely worth it.
There are no pictures of the interior of the "chalet," and the exterior shot is at a distance, so my guess is that the house is on the spartan side. I would concur that rush-hour distance to DC will probably be over an hour.
Hi thanks for all the information. We are headed down to visit this month. Can someone recommend a hotel in the GW area which would be family friendly, or not too stuffy. We need a suite or something with a kitchen as our child in young and needs to be fed in the room at times.
We are going to stay a few days in March and return again in April. We have a few real estate rentals to look at. We are a family so we want to have a life as well as our careers here. Also we want to visit the Zoo while there. Any suggestions appreciated. thnx ~~
There is an Embassy Suites at 22nd and N Streets NW that might fit the bill. That area is West End. Safe, quiet for the most part. It's about 5 blocks north of Foggy Bottom and the GW campus. Fridge and microwave in every room. Nice waterfall and koi pond in the lobby. The free breakfast earns many positive comments. $145 a night and up, but maybe you could find a deal on some travel site. It would be about a 5-block walk also (to the east) to reach the Metro Red Line station at Dupont Circle which would whisk you north to the Zoo in about ten minutes.
If you head to the zoo via Metro, don't get off at the Woodley Park/Zoo exit. Go one stop further, and get off at Cleveland Park, then walk DOWN Conn. Ave to the zoo. When you're ready to leave, walk DOWN Conn. Ave to the Woodley Park exit. This is especially helpful when walking with young children -- you don't want them to be tired of walking before you even get to the zoo gate (where plenty of walking up and down hills awaits you).
Thanks Im concerned about the walking in the zoo etc. Our child is 3 but we dont generally use a stroller anymore. I was thinking about borrowing one and packing it for the trip.
This is where we are probably staying. How far from the zoo area are we ? State Plaza Hotel
2117 E Street, N.W
You can rent a large stroller at the zoo. They are very nice and lightweight, and well worth the fee for a three year old who might appreciate a ride up some of the hills....
Not sure how far from the zoo you'll be, but you are walking distance to the Foggy Bottom metro stop -- you can take the orange/blue lines to Metro Center, then transfer to the Red Line to Woodley Park or Cleveland Park.
If you'll be in town over the weekend, driving to the zoo would also be an option, but plan to get there when it opens, as the parking lots fill up early on nice weekend days. I wouldn't try driving from Foggy Bottom on a weekday.
There is no charge to enter the zoo, but there is a parking fee.
