It depends what you mean by "cheap" and on where you want to live in DC. You can find affordable housing in group homes in Adam's Morgan or on Capitol Hill. Your best bet for inexpensive and nice apartments would be in Arlington, VA. Pentagon City, Crystal City and Alexandria all have nice, new, modern apartments and are all close to metro lines. If you work in DC your commute to work would be just as long as if you're coming from Adam's Morgan.

If you are a recent grad, the best option is to get a place that has several roommates and split the costs. It also helps you get entered into some social whirl of DC by having folks already with feet on the ground.

Is there a cheap place for you by yourself? Of course, but there are a lot of factors that will go into that. It might not be the cleanest or safest of areas, and there might be no public transit, neighborhood stores, etc. But if cheap is all you are looking for, you can find that with a bit of looking.

note: DC is one of the highest priced housing markets in the USA.

That will depend on what your definition of "cheap" is...

These nice new modern apartments in Arlington and Alexandria usually come with a price tag in excess of $2,000 per month. I live on the Court House/Clarendon border in Arlington and my complex, which was built in the 1930s has 1 bedroom apartments that start at $1,400 per month, which is about the same as all other complexes on surrounding streets. There are VERY few places inside the beltway (at least in VA) where one can find truly affordable housing options...
