I am driving up to DC to take the train to NYC from there. Is there a place in DC where I could leave my car for two days, for free? it's a cheap car, and I don't mind street parking, but I'd like to find my wheels when I come back.
Probably not. Parking tends to be free most places on Sunday. Do you have a friend who lives in DC and has a parking garage at their apartment or condo? If so, that is your best bet.

Not gonna happen. Only free street parking is with a RPP or RPP visitor pass. So unless you know someone that lives in DC, you will not find free parking here.
Over 100,000 people pass through Union Station every day... if there was free parking, surely someone else would've taken it by now! There's no free (e.g., no meters, no permits) street parking within miles of Union Station. The station itself charges $24/day, and other garages nearby aren't much cheaper.

I can personally attest to the street parking along the south side of Tilden Street NW east of Connecticut Avenue. It's unrestricted and a very safe area within a 5 minute walk of the Cleveland Park Metro which is on the Red Line along with Union Station. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Em...!4d-77.0591844
I used to live near the Rhode Island Metro station (near Rhode Island and 4th St NE) and would park my car there during the weekdays and never get ticketed. Of course, it's a risk though, but still you never know. I never got ticketed though.
