Hi,

My husband and I are relocating to DC and looking for an apartment. We really like the Capitol Hill area and we found some good prospects around Lincoln Park but were wondering about safety in this area. Anybody familiar with it? We are both used to living in the city (we are relocating from NYC) but the long walk to Union Station or the Stadium/Armory metro is giving us some pause as I would likely take it on by myself and at night. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

It's generally a pretty safe area. I live a little outside of Capitol Hill, so I can't speak for the metro walks, but I have friends in that area who love it. The Stadium/Armory metro is getting a little far east, so at night I'd probably try to get off at Eastern Market or Potomac Avenue instead. I think there may be a bus or two that runs from Union Station to Lincoln Park as well, which would cut down the walk in bad weather.

I think most of the posters here would be willing to live on the Hill, though the closer to the Capitol or E. Market the better and I think all would also say 'hey, it's the city, stay sharp.'

It is quite a hike to Union Station. Not sure if the Eastern Market / Potomac stations would be closer. Stadium armory goes through a few blocks that have not been gentrified just yet. You should check a map. I think the metro and some of the retail options on Penn Ave and 8th Street have made the SE / Eastern Market area a slight bit more desirable than say the same address in the NE quadrant, but your milage may vary (I'd certainly consider buying in NE if it was a bargain, as that might be a good investment).

But really it's going to come down to you. Put the address in this website and see if the crime levels here are too much, too little, just right

I think it's a great neighborhood, it has changed dramatically, but the decision like someone says is up to you.

That is a very nice neighborhood, though there is some crime. It's been on the upswing for over 25 years so the gentrification process is pretty well developed at this point. The closest metro stop is Eastern Market. In the winter I'd rather transfer to the Red Line than walk all the way to Union Station, but that will depend on your tolerance for the cold.
