I'm pursuing a job in Columbia, MD, very close to I95, and it seems like a nice area but I'd much rather live in DC for the city life.
How realistic would it be to commute from DC to Columbia? Are there any neighborhoods in Northern DC that are still considered the city or at least have easy access to the city but would also make for a tolerable drive to Columbia?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
It would be possible - maybe not a lot of fun. I think it would be about 45 minutes each way, depending on where you started in DC. It does count as a reverse commute, so stop-and-go traffic should be rare. Silver Spring would be one option - you'd have to put up with some brutal traffic leaving SS and on the beltway before getting to I95. Another option would be somewhere accessible to the BW Parkway, which is usually clear going northbound in the AM. Maybe Ledroit Park, Brookland, or northern Capitol Hill. Maybe Chevy Chase in upper NW also, although that starts to be a long beltway "leg"...
