Can anyone tell me some of the off the beaten path things to do and see in the area, like not the most popular tourist spots and such but some of the things that locals do more than the tourists, and/or some out of the way places to see in the city and such that are off the beaten path? I like touring the popular touristy areas but also the more local areas, neighborhoods, museums, and dining spots, etc. etc.

Visit the museum and gardens at Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown. They have one of the world's largest collections of Byzantine and pre-Columbian artin the world, and the gardens are among the finest in all of Washington. The museum is free, but the gardens require a small fee (between $5-$10 I think). It's one of my favorite places in DC, and surprisingly few tourists know about it.

Beyond that, there are literally millions of off-the-beaten path things you can do. If you can share some of your interests, I and others can probably point you in some good directions.

A friend of mine came up here to work for a few months and went to the Mansion on O Street for brunch. She said it was amazing, you got the brunch and then could tour the rooms (which she said were all different and really interesting). There's also afternoon tea if you don't want to go to brunch. I hadn't even heard about it, but it sounded cool.

Two gems in NE- National Arboretum (US National Arboretum * * * *:.) and the Aquatic Gardens (Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens (U.S. National Park Service)). The Aquatic Gardens is really off the beaten path!

Walter Reed Army Medical Museum: filled with many strange medical oddities.

College Park Airport, the world's oldest.

Forest Glen seminary: a collection of old buildings from various architecture styles around the world, used to be an all girls finishing school

National Trolley Museum, as the name implies.

Glen Echo Park, Friday night swing and contra dancing is the most popular thing there, there's lot of other activities just check the website.

Probably for a lot of tourists, yes. U Street's a popular hangout for the locals, not so much a tourist hotbed. Thank God.

Although there is a Busboys in NoMa now.
