We are currently in Brazil (long story) and are looking at various locales for a part time home, and, in a few years, full time retirement home. We've looked at many areas but now are most interested in the Northwest. My wife prefers a gated community due to likely period prolonged absences. Yes, I know, a gated community is not necessary and is no guarantee ot safety, etc., etc., but that's what she wants, at least now, and I've not been able to convince her otherwise. We found some newer homes in the Indian Summer development within our budget (prefer under $350k). Anyone familar with this subdivsion?

How would weather in the Olympia area likely compare with that in Seattle, and on the peninsula (e.g., Port Orchard, site of another devleopment we've looked at, though there the homes are brand new)? Hopefull visiting the area in early June. Thanks!

That's a very nice community built around a golf course. The south part of Lacey is the "newer" area of town and nice, clean, very suburban area. I would guess extremely low crime in the entire area. I have some friends who live in a development adjacent to Indian Summer and they liked it so much that they had both their daughter's families buy houses in the same general area. I don't think you have to worry about leaving as there are also lots of snowbirds in the area. I know several in the general area who only spend part of the year in the area. It's convenient to most things in the Olympia area.

You really won't be able to tell a drastic difference in weather in Olympia compared with Seattle. Olympia statistically has more days of rain, supposedly, but it's something that you won't perceive unless really scrutinizing statistics. Olympia also has colder nights in the winter and may be a degree or two warmer in the summer but not always. Again, the difference will not be perceptible to most without really paying attention to statistical data.

I know there are several Realtors who participate on this forum, one in particular, who can give you more detailed and pinpoint information about the south Sound area if they should happen to see this thread.

My comments are only my opinion. Others will disagree but we are all entitled to express our opinion here so I've expressed mine which doesn't mean much and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Indian Summer is a very nice community. It's got a beautiful golf course and access to the Chehalis Western Trail, a paved and level trail that will take you all the way to the Sound. The main gate at Indian Summer is staffed by security. The club house has a restaurant and spa, and outside the gate there is shopping, restaurants and mediacl services within walking distance. Spooner Frams has a big strawberry field right next to Indian Summer, so in the summer months you can pick or purchase all sorts of fresh berries. The Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater area is not the kind of place where a gated community is required to feel safe. There are several other nice communities that would work well for "snowbirds". In Lavey there is Jubilee for people who are 55 and above. It's also on a golf course and has a trail to the beach. Best of luck with your move to the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I'm a transplant from Europe and I love it here.
