I'm sick of the high humidity, constant threat of tornadoes, insanely high sales and income taxes---sales tax is increasing in January and property taxes are among the worst in the nation. It's too crowded here; I would personally take a pay cut if I know if I can live a comfortable life in eastern Washington, north Idaho. What is the cost of a typical one-bedroom condo around the Spokane Valley area? Does the area get tornadoes like we do here? Everytime I drive around in the summer, the sky changes quickly, sometimes turning green, meaning a tornado is imminent. I would appreciate any feedback, either here or in a private message. Thanks.

Constant threat of tornados? I've been here for 43 years and have never been a victim of a tornado. I've never even seen one. I do agree that the humidity is high.

I adore Chicago, but the winters are brutal. If only someone could pick up the whole city and transport it out to the PNW ... :-)

To answer the OP's original question, a 1 bd 1 ba condo in the Spokane Valley can be purchased for $65,000 - $115,000. Monthly fees range from $67 - $165. No tornadoes here - very typical 4 season climate. Very low humidity but we do get some rain & snow. Sales tax is 8% here. How does this compare with Chicago?

Chicago condos are more expensive. Sales tax hovers around 8.5-9% but may be increased soon. We have 4 extreme climates, summer is very humid.

These are all the reasons I want to leave. I am only here because I have family here and I would like to take care of them. However, I don't plan on dying here.

So long as you can visit Chicago for the food (Italian beef and the like) then move. Every place I've lived in the US does not compare to Chicago when it comes to the variety of ethnic eateries and pizza....yeah...lots of places have that stuff, but you'll see what I mean when you leave Chicago.....so make sure you can go back for sanity trips. There will be things you'll miss about Chicago and things you won't like about your new place...it's just the way of life....good luck in your decision.

When I lived in Coeur d'Alene in the late 70's the Spokane area had a tornado. The tee-shirt vendors had a field day selling T-Shirts that said " I survived the Spokane Tornado". I believe Spokane had another tornado in the late 1990's. Neither one touched down and caused any damage, but both were classified as tornado's by the National Weather Service.
