I am looking to live in a town that has sort of a fantasy/fairy tale feel (like Carmel by the sea or Solvang) within an hour drive from Seattle. I have already looked at Leavenworth, but it is to far away from Seattle (2 and a half hours)

thank you for your help

Poulsbo? Not as all encompassing as solvang or leavenworth, but it's the only candidate I can think of.

I agree, the only other and closest is Poulsbo, by ferry from Seattle 35 minutes on the water, another 15 or so driving from the Bainbridge Island dock. You would likely find it disappointing after Solvang, however. The quaint old downtown is very small, the rest more rural with some newer suburban tract developments.

Only Leavenworth comes close to measuring up to Solvang. Except Leavenworth's German theme was done purely for economic development purposes, whereas Solvang actually was settled by Danes. The history is authentic.

Port Townsend also has a fairy-tale quality to it, but it is more than an hour away from Seattle. Port Gamble is cute, but I dunno whether there are actual private residences in it, and I think it takes more than an hour to get to Seattle..

Neither of these places is really like Solvang or Leavenworth though.

La Conner, but also not within an hour's drive of Seattle.

Downtown Snohomish is a kind of fantasy railroad town.

Agree with Ira! We've lived in oldtown Poulsbo for nearly 8 years now and love it more than ever! Poulsbo isn't quite like either Carmel by the Sea or Solvang, but the town has an authentic Norwegian heritage, quaint downtown, good restaurants, strong sense of community, beautiful waterfront with view of the Olympics, plus the awesome Central Market. :-) Realistically however, Poulsbo is closer to an hour and a half to Seattle allowing for ferry wait/loading/unloading times. You can drive around, but that takes about an hour and a half also--or more, depending on traffic.
