America's Most Miserable Cities
Forbes.com
01.30.08

The "FORBES MISERY MEASURE" signifies a "state of great unhappiness and emotional distress” due to:
unemployment rate
inflation rate
personal tax rate
commute times
weather
crime
toxic waste.
Forbes studied “only the 150 largest metropolitan areas ... with a minimum population of 371,000”.

Misery metros:
1. DETROIT, MI
2. STOCKTON, CA
3. FLINT, MI
4. NEW YORK CITY, NY
5. PHILADELPHIA, PA
6. CHICAGO, IL
7. LOS ANGELES, CA
8. MODESTO, CA
9. CHARLOTTE, NC
10. PROVIDENCE, RI

From personal experience, I'd put Providence closer to number one, but, yes, as someone who has lived for extended periods in #s 4, 7 and 10, I agree that if those cities are in the top 10, Seattle (or any other metro area I've seen in the PNW) shouldn't even be *close*.

No I don't think anywhere in the northwest belong on the most meserable cities list. I haven't been to some of those cities but I agree with the ones that are there.

I'm surprised Charlotte is on that list unless it has significantly changed over the past 5-6 years. People always seemed pretty happy in that area (and very polite). Even though parts of the city do have extreme poverty and crime, people still seemed pretty happy.

Only saying that because it doesn't seem as "miserable" as about 3 or 4 other large cities I can think off the top of my head, all in Florida.

I'm sure the statistics don't lie though, maybe "toxic waste" throws off some of those a little.

There definitely aren't any cities in WA (per population) that would even be in the top 20, but Tacoma might come close, maybe top 40, if it had 371,000 people.

I think that list is pretty subjective... I have lived in several of those places and would not classify them as 'miserable'. As always it depends upon your personal situation. (someone that needs a lot of sunshine, wants to play golf every day, and requires cheap housing may be miserable in much of the PNW).

I'm more surprised by who ISN'T on the list. Where is Washington, DC? It should be number one! I lived there as a kid and they have NEVER been a part of the real world!

Well, I guess you'd have to take it up with Forbes magazine! Maybe they have some sort of "metropolitan area" definition.

forbes is looking for cities with min. of 371,000 per capa of misery Stockton ca. only has about 230,000 people . Of which maybe 100,000 are miserable? Tacoma would seam to be a better fit for a smaller 371,000 city I would think. Based on doom & gloom ,low cloud cover mist and classic PNW misery, Tacoma fits the bill better than the central ca. valley.
