Having far more impact than the spotted owl is the shutdown of many of the sawmills and manufacturing that provided a lot of the 'town' jobs.

The loggers are still working up in the hills, but we're shipping a lot of the raw logs ~elsewhere~ for processing... to Japan, China, who knows where else... and buying them back as products. Those jobs - making our trees into things - were all lost... exported.

The rankings weight the violent crime rate at 1.5 times the property crime rate. It can be argued that it should be higher (2.0?). If we sort for just violent crime rates:

Safest (Violent Crime Only):

10. Snoqualmie
14. Mercer Island
1. Sammamish
19. Newcastle
2. Lynden
4. Camas
45. Sedro Wooley
12. Lake Forest Park
15. Mill Creek
5. Maple Valley
3. West Richland
20. Kirkland
29. Anacortes
7. Kenmore
40. Bellevue
36. Issaquah

Least Safe (Violent Crime Only):

77. Tacoma
80. Tukwila
64. Lakewood
78. Fife
69. Seattle
79. Spokane
61. Port Angeles
70. SeaTac
65. Yakima
51. Bremerton
72. Moses Lake
58. Burien
73. Federal Way
55. Aberdeen
74. Kelso
60. Everett
CrazyDonkey, please help paint a picture for me here, seriously. I do not understand how Everett can be the worst!? Yet, it is so close to places like Mill Creek which is one of the best? In fact, Everett's southeastern area borders Mill Creek. What is going on with Everett and these extremes? It does seem to have some good parts. I'm liking some parts this greater Snohomish region north of Seattle. But that violent crime really gives me pause for thought in bringing a family near that mess. Is EvCC or Edmonds CC dangerous to walk around for teens? What about shopping near those areas like Costco, Trader Joes, the mall, etc...? I hear Casino Rd. is really bad out that way.

ETA: If you look closer at the survey numbers, violent crime per 1,000 is one of the important metrics used in light of the different size cities reviewed. The average is 3.87. Now sort by that column metric and Everett looks a 'little' better at 4.50 - at least not the very bottom which Tacoma is at 9.53. Some would even argue Tacoma has its better parts. I guess it depends what one feels safe with. Obviously less crime overall is the best.

You've got it upside down. Tacoma was the most "least safe" (violent crime only) city on that list.

Ah, ok. So you started with best city at the top of the first list and the worst on top of the second. Based on that order Everett is the 'least worst' on your 'least safe' city list. It all makes sense now, sort of. lol

Interestingly we moved from Battle Ground(13th safest) to southeast Vancouver(44th safest) city limits and our auto insurance premiums went down considerably. You'd think with the higher property crime rate that would be reversed.

Yeah, I hear you notnamed. But I thought you decided to move to Camas? As a Vancouver local I'm sure you know how 'varied' the area is in terms of neighborhoods with some higher crime parts as well as nicer, upscale neighborhoods. It has quite a variety which crime statistics reflect. Here's a more fine grained breakdown beyond the generalized survey results.

Moderator cut: link removed, competitor site

Insurance actuaries look at a combination of risk factors especially for car insurance. While Battle Ground may have generally lower crime, residents could have a greater number of accidents overall. They may be driving a lot more into town in all kinds of weather and night conditions. Auto accidents were one of StealthRabbits only complaints about country living. Based upon the numbers your life is apparently 'safer' now while on the road.

We’re in a short term rental while waiting for our build to finish. But no, not building in Camas. Five Corners/Brush Prairie area. One of those evil people moving into a subdivision that was a farm just a year ago.

What A funny list. Let’s admit it, live in the country, suburbs and it’s safe. Live in the big city, congested area and it’s unsafe. Ha! Bellevue was the only big city in the safe list.

Actually, it varies. Larger cities have more renters and homeless, and tend to have more "bad" areas that tend to skew crime rates up, but also many "good" areas that are quite safe. Most criminals are not property owners. Smaller cities can be safer (Snoqualmie) or less safe (Tukwila) because of their demographics (richer or poorer) or other characteristics that repel or attract crime (gated developments, on the one hand, or motel rows or shopping centers, on the other). Bellevue ranks high for safety from violent crime (#15), but not for crime in general (#40).
