Yea there is a reason why I hear it referred to as Crackima so often.

A very eye opening list, had no idea some of those places scored so poorly.

#13, woot?

But even Tukwila has a better crime rate than what I was used to back east. Only thing I'm really concerned about here is package theft.

Yakima is the 16th least safe city. Yakima is a tale of two cities: East Yakima: not safe (gangs); West Yakima: safe (no gangs).

The rankings weight the violent crime rate at 1.5 times the property crime rate. It can be argued that it should be higher (2.0?). If we sort for just violent crime rates:

Safest (Violent Crime Only):

10. Snoqualmie
14. Mercer Island
1. Sammamish
19. Newcastle
2. Lynden
4. Camas
45. Sedro Wooley
12. Lake Forest Park
15. Mill Creek
5. Maple Valley
3. West Richland
20. Kirkland
29. Anacortes
7. Kenmore
40. Bellevue
36. Issaquah

Least Safe (Violent Crime Only):

77. Tacoma
80. Tukwila
64. Lakewood
78. Fife
69. Seattle
79. Spokane
61. Port Angeles
70. SeaTac
65. Yakima
51. Bremerton
72. Moses Lake
58. Burien
73. Federal Way
55. Aberdeen
74. Kelso
60. Everett

That’s about the 3rd or 4th time we have been #1 on some list or other. Still, no one seems to know where Sammamish is when we say where we live.

Probably, and its just a guess on my part, it is because most of those places have a high concentrate of minorities and gangs. Especially Yakima which has a large illegal alien population.
Not sure why Port Angels is on the list as I have not seen much violent crimes there reported in the PDN.
As far as I know there are no gang reported activity on the Peninsula. If there is it is a well kept secret.

Poverty and lack of education are the main predictors of crime; minorities are simply more likely to be poor and uneducated. Aberdeen is on the Least Safe List (violent crime only) and is 72% white. Port Angeles is 83% white. They both, however, have unemployed loggers...

Probably because it's hardly a real town, just an incorporated bedroom community that's not on the way to anywhere. Unless you're going up onto the plateau you'd never go near Sammamish.

Even Google Maps barely knows where it is. Search for a city and Google will outline the borders, but not for Sammamish.

What? Unemployed loggers are a violent threat to our society?
The spotted owl thing that shut down logging on state and federal land was so many years ago I am sure most loggers losing their jobs have moved on.

They're a grumpy lot. Logging is still a big part of the Peninsula economy - the spotted owl ruling primarily impacted old growth stands within national forests. The work just isn't as regular as it once was. Driving on 101, you'll still have to dodge plenty of logging trucks.

Story I remember is that some years back, the Hell's Angels decided to make a tour of the Olympic Peninsula. When they rolled into Forks, the loggers blocked both ends of town with logging trucks and proceeded to literally wipe the highway with the Angels. They haven't been back since.
