I had read in a previous post that it wasn't a particularly good idea to live on the reservation if a person wasn't a member of the tribe, but I was curious to know what everyone’s opinions were about possibly working on the reservation while not being a member.

I actually didn't even realize that you could work or live on the reservation if you weren't a member. I'll be watching this thread.

My personal opinion is unless you are a member of the tribe living on the reservation then you shouldn't work on the reservation. You will be in direct competition with the native americans for those jobs and they have such slim pickings as it is. Most reservations are poor and I don't even want to think about outside ppl. taking "their" jobs. This is the quick/simple version of my opinion...

Why do you want to go work on the reservation?

Please don't tell me Twilight has anything to do with it...

Yes please no Twilight -
On rez that have casinos you can get a job - IF no tribal member wants it and you pass a credit check and FBI - at least the ones I know .... as far as non casino jobs - uhmmm I haven't heard of any besides maybe a Biologist that works for the tribe... but actually think he might have been half.

You can't fish the waters/or clams commerically legally with tribal members... friend of mine went out and fixed tribal boat during the fishing - could have gone to jail for being on the boat.... differnt tribe but think it is the same!

Wondering why for your question?

To be honest, I didn’t even know it was a reservation or tribe until I started to do more research. I had been looking for jobs, and was many pages into Google when that particular job popped up. I thought “Quileute Nation” was the name of a company. I live in Maryland, so I didn’t know anything about it. [

And no, Twilight has nothing to do with my wanting a job there or moving to Washington at all. The only thing Twilight has done for me is make it a bit tricky to find any real information regarding the tribe or Forks. All I can seem to find is the “cold one’s” legend that isn’t even real.

It might be a good idea to visit the coast before you accept a job here. You might decide it's too remote for you. Google LaPush instead of the tribe, and you might have better luck.

The Lower Elwha tribe just opened a new casino, but I think like most tribal jobs they go to tribal members first.

While I love the Twilight series, I don't want people moving here just because of the books. You need to like words such as remote and rain to be able to live in that part of the state. Which is why I live in Sequim.

The Salish and the Yakima have both hired me to work on their reservations before, and while I am part NA I am certainly not either a Yakima or from one of the Salish tribes. I had a contract that ran for years with the Yakima Nation, and help train the Yakima who finally took my position when she got through college.

If they hire you, it is because they need you. You don't send the plumber packing because he is not part of your family do you?

Hell the Puyallups own some big chunk of the Tacoma/Fife area. Of course most people passing by have no clue that area is part of their reservation. Ditto for the Yakima nation, go look at it on the map they lease huge areas of it out to others.

Stephica:

Forks is serious boondocks. Better want to be country. And that has a whole new meaning on this side of the country and in that part of Washington.
