We got up to 11.4C after our -2.6C low today, making today the coldest and warmest day of March so far. The 14C diurnal range is big for us - there were only 15 days last year with a bigger range, all between April and July. The whole of last December only had a range of 13.6C. 7.0C now at 8.30pm.

4 months with no diurnal range greater than 10C almost seems unbelievable.

I'm not sure how normal that is, but being a heat island London doesn't get the cold nights the rest of the country gets (the coldest the Hampstead site got this winter was -5.8C, possibly one of the mildest absolute lows for the whole country), plus it was an extremely dull winter with fewer clearer days than normal, plus my particular station is on top of the highest hill in the city (though only 400ft), so won't get the range they'll have got on lower ground. From now on with the stronger sun 10C diurnal ranges will be much more common, though still a minority of days.

-5.8C is mild given the December you had, the heat island effect is very interesting. Heading into spring would be nice, it's already getting autumnal here. Yesterdays temp range( I was working 30 km inland) was 3-23C.

That night we got the -5.8C was pretty strange, I think the centre/airport were both about -9, a lot of outer London suburbs around -12, and near -20 not far from the city, VERY rare to get that much variation in a small area. I think we were the mildest site for miles around despite not being in the heat island itself. I've seen a 20C diurnal range abroad I think, I remember when I lived in Spain a few of the inland cities at 500m asl or so at the bottom of valleys shielded from the Atlantic moisture like Salamanca were often forecast days like 23/3 in springtime, but for us to get a 20C range in Hampstead we'd probably need a particularly warm warm spell around May in the 25-28C range followed by a strong cold front at just the right time of day and a completely clear night. I've found some 15-17C ranges in the record books, but as far as a 20 goes I don't know when or even if it's happened.

Fair
42 F
Windchill 38 F
Dewpoint 17 F
Humidity 36%

Lovely day with comfortable temperatures and even some unexpected cloud cover. Wintry mix possible tomorrow night...2-4 inches of rain possible Thursday into Friday. This after receiving 2.44 inches of rain on Sunday followed by a coating of ice and snow. There was actually still ice on the trees on higher elevations this morning.

Lucky! I don't mind spring, but I'm not looking forward to summer. Autumn is my favorite season.

Where do you get your data, out of interest?
I live near Hampstead and have quite an interest in the weather.
I've found these figures for the coldest night of the winter (20th December):
-6 (EGLC, aka London City AP; source: History : Weather Underground)
-6.1 (Hampstead; source: http://www.climate-uk.com/monthly/1012.htm)

Admittedly it was -9 at Heathrow and -14 at that notorious frost hollow, Northolt, but these are quite a way from the centre to be fair.

I tend to think of Hampstead itself as being rather urban really (maybe not technically part of the heat island though; I'm not sure on that), so I wouldn't expect the temp to decay much away from London City. Beyond that the suburbs kick in so the temp decays quite nicely on clear, calm nights, as evidenced by the above data, albeit it in a perhaps unusually strong manner.

We had a range of 27.5°C early last April. The ground is still very cold but we got a warm air mass and the sun is strong and the air was dry. High 32.9°C, Low 4.9°C. We had a number of days with a range close to 20°C that month.

Hey, ILNC. At least it didn't hit 96°F like back home in McAllen, TX. I'm dreading the weather the week I'm going. I hear Denver's going to be in the 60s when I leave.
