The best course with these "fantasy storms" (which by the way sometimes do verify (at least with there being "a storm")) is to see if there is consistency and support across the models over a period of a few days. If it keeps showing up it's usually onto something. Of course more often than not these sort of things disappear 6 hours later never to be seen again, which is why the maxim of not fretting over one run is so valuable.

The match is uncanny.

As I recall two weeks before that storm a nor'easter with totals anywhere from 3 to 12 inches across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast kept showing up on the GFS. As I said, some of these fantasy storms are the first sign of storms that materialize in reality. Consistency is the clencher.

There has been next to no phasing of the jet streams the entire winter. The GFS is playing tricks on us again. Temperatures remain way above average in the interior Northeast with little snowcover with the exception of the more northerly areas.

I've got a ton of saved images from models back then that showed it. Here's the GFS Mid October(2 weeks before)

The key thing I learned is "how many times in a row it shows it". a.k.a consistancy.

Same here, not with blizzards but with cold. And not two weeks ahead but only a few days. Two days ago it was modelling -18°C at 850 hPa for Paris for next Sunday, today it's -6°C.
What's next? A heatwave?

That is very interesting hearing it from other parts of the globe. It's usually or rarely this innacurate so maybe there's a bigger player on the field thats causing this. Maybe Japans earthquake did titl the axis enough to disrupt the weather pattern?

Glad this snow and cold is getting downgraded! Given it's the only type of weather that stops me working (I drive) and putting food on the table I have every reason to be glad too when it's downgraded given the type of roads around here. Saw some cars which had slid off the road last week! I managed to get there though. Ironic that the car which had slid of the road was a 4x4.

Disclaimer for the slow: this is not a whinge, it is a mere statement of reality. Perhaps if I didn't do the type of job I do or was unemployed or a teen in a basement like most snow lovers I would like the snow too

Just joking

Doesn't sound like whining to me. Glad you're happy about the weather.

My town has a ski resort that brings in a lot of tourist dollars and creates hundreds of seasonal jobs. I work there during the winter and make some decent money. Other than that, there's a very limited number of jobs in this area. Many rely it on for secondary income. My father has had snow removal contracts with them in the past and has it with another client this winter.

I live in a hilly area (elevation ranges from 500-1,800 feet) and I had to commute thirty miles the past couple winters. While it got very dicey at times, it didn't change my view of winter.
