I'm curious to see which climate the cold lovers favour in this battle...

personally, I choose Tromsø for slightly milder winters and a bit drier plus the fact that it's at 69° latitude makes for some interesting daylight variation.. i.e. midnight sun in summer and aurora borealis in winter which St. John's can't get or at least in the case of the aurora very rare.

Tromsø by far.

Tromsø is a B+ climate and St. Johns is a C+.

I like Tromsø's precip pattern more.

St. John's. Warmer overall, with much better summers and more sunshine. 215 days with precipitation could be a problem though. Both D, possibly F climates.

St John's - poor, but warmer and sunnier than Troms*.

St John's, also due to it being warmer and sunnier.

24hr light/darkness and 'Northern Lights' would be interesting in Tromso but I'd probably get sick of the total winter darkness very quickly. If I was forced to live north of the Arctic Circle, this would probably be the place, very temperate considering it's at 69 degress north.

I chose Tromsø, but I missed the part about the odd daylight hours. I think that would get old to me pretty quickly.

Ooh...Finally we have a climate battle between two choices that look nice. Tromsø is a nice "maritime" climate, but I choose Saint John's. Though Tromsø has the best summers, Saint John's has colder nighttime lows in the winter, and more moisture, thus I imagine it gets more snow and is more continental than Tromsø. St. John's has about the same record high, and record lows there are colder. St. John's has warmer summers, but they're still pretty good.

I go with St John's myself. Snowier in winter, possibility of tropical storms / hurricanes in late summer are both pluses. The negative to living in Tromso would be the crazy daylight hours - I'd not be getting any sleep during the time of the midnight sun...lol. Be a nice place to visit though.
