Melbourne haves nearly perfect numbers, or perfect should i said! Only the records are insanely high, but those are only records, the actual summer tmeperatures look super comfortable. The Cape haves insanely high lows in the summer.
Melbourne no doubt about it... winters are a bit warmer on average and nearly frostless in Melbourne... I also like the hot spells in summer in Melbourne better.
Melbourne for me. It's much cooler at night in the summer, though it's warm at night in the winter. The small amount of snow in Cape Hatteras isn't worth the much hotter summers.

For most intents and purposes Cape Hatteras is snowless. A winter fan would brush it off at first glance. They do get the occasional snow event, maybe once every few years, and several inches can accumulate in a single storm on rarer occasions. This occurred in 2011. As for hurricanes they aren't much of a problem.

So, of course, Melbourne it is.
I got news for ya... the 46.4C record high is for the CBD only.... most stations in the suburban area recorded over 47C that day, the highest officially being 47.9C at Avalon Airport I think that's not only a capital city record, but a record for any suburban area in Australia that is part of a capital city.

Flight Simmer, you are very lucky to live in Melbourne

Mild winters but not too mild
Now that you mention that... Melbourne is pretty much in the same hardiness zone as Miami The city centre and bayside suburbs pretty much never see frost. Even here, about 20km inland and in the outer SE suburbs, the last hard frost I saw was in 2005. I haven't seen a "white" lawn in perhaps 3-4 years. It never snows here, even getting a 24 hour high of 10C is essentially impossible.
Thunderstorms, we tend to get either nothing or intense squall lines or supercell activity. Large hail is actually a common threat with storms. Even car dealerships often run promotions with hail damaged cars.

If I want to be hit by a hurricane or sweat like pig,
then Cape Hatteras would be better
Sweating like a pig, especially at night, is a sign of a real summer. An ice-cold 6 pack should alleviate the sweat for a while...if it returns, smash another 6 pack

That's very true, at least in my case (using ColdCanadian's sweating might be a little off...). I and other heat haters don't like real summers in the first place, but that's no excuse for distorting seasonal definitions (which that particular poster wasn't doing).
