(Where I'll be spending my Xmas break!)

I've always had a soft spot for Central Otago in New Zealand. As well as being a beautiful area, it is the furthest removed from the ocean therefore less resembling a typical Oceanic climate.

Alexandra averages under 400mm of rainfall annually, very low for an Oceanic climate. It also has a large variation between average winter and summer maximums. Here is a link:

I am sure RWood can correct me if I'm wrong, but i suspect the annual sunshine hours is around 2,100.

Lots of points for the low rainfall and relatively warm summers, but 2,100 sunshine hours is not enough for myself. I'd rate it a B-.

Too dry, and diurnal range higher than I'd like, but otherwise very pleasant. The highs actually look similar to London's only with a longer summer and shorter winter. B-.

Temperatures and sunshine sound OK but precipitation is too low.

Still quite oceanic. The annual range lower than here and it's too dry, so no more than a D. However, landscapes of Central Otago sure look beautiful.

Are these native yuccas?

C. Too dry and not warm enough in the summer. Sunshine isn't great either.

Nearby Cromwell is over the 2250 mark. Alexandra readings are taken in the town "basin" where there's more daylight loss. Values on the southern hill slopes of the town would be about 2100 hrs.

Temp data is not right - updated averages show annual Tmax average 17.8C, 25.2C in January. Annual average Tmin is 4.4C (10.9C in January), so nights are always quite cool. Rainfall mean is about 345mm.

Really nice climate. Rainfall is lower than ideal and I imagine it's kind of boring, but temperatures are very comfortable and sunshine hours are good.
