In south Texas I think that January is typically the coldest month. But I don't understand this either, because I would have thought logically it would be February, since early February is in the *middle* of winter.
February may be the coldest month in some oceanic climates, but for the most part, January is the coldest month of the year in the northern hemisphere. Climatic and other factors generally have more of an influence than day length.

February is not the coldest month here, December is. But we are having mild weather now so I suspect February will be much colder.

The coldest night is usually in either January or (early) February, although winter solstice in Duluth can be very cold. It can also be with a high of 34 and low of 30.

The coldest night in this region, especially just inland from the coast can occasionally be in late June where I live, but most commonly it is in late July- early August.
Same reason as the Northern Hemisphere - the lag effect.

As opposed to sometime in the middle of winter.

Is this true?
No, it's the longest night of the year.

It's also the night when the long journey to the coldest night, is moving the fastest. But it hasn't gotten there yet. That happens sometime in January or February.

In recent years in England the coldest night has been near the solstice but only due to co-incidence. On average it is probably in mid January.

I have looked at historical averages of selected cities in NA, the coldest period is usually from mid Jan to early Feb, lasting approximately for 3 weeks.

That's why Jan is the coldest month (2 coldest weeks) of the year whereas Feb is the second coldest month (1 coldest week) of the year.

Usually the coldest nights here are in early February, when the day is 2.5h longer than at solstice. This year the coldest temperature of the winter was recorded on February 5th.

My mother often quotes an old Pa dutch saying, or an old folklore saying in general: " As the days grow longer, the cold grows stronger." Meaning days in January are colder than in December even if there is more sunlight after the Winter Solstice.
