I've never seen hail where I'm currently living, not even once. Other places nearby, get it quite often though.

Just had a thunderstorm come through. A 6 on the Joe scale (1-10). A bit of window rattling. It's moved North, with the odd distant rumble still reaching here.

No it isn't the wind. I'm not thick.

I couldn't find any system for defining rainfall rates for NZ, only events. 100 mm in 24 hours is a heavy rainfall event, so the same as the UK met office.

But we don't have 12,000feet mountains so the orographic effect will not occur.

Really? It hails here in the middle of the summer. I seen hail in Florida when I visited.

Why is it smashing against the window then? It's obviously not coming straight down.

Explain yourself man!

Average is about 15°C so we're well below normal.
If this nutty below average weather continues we might see single figure maximums in July. Could you imagine that. That is polar weather.

The mountains only explain part of it. The sheer quantity of moisture and the extra warmth of the air are as big a factors.

Not sure why it doesn't hail here. I think it may have some connection to the reason it doesn't snow here.
