A couple of the suburbs actually broke the frost barrier this morning....
It's almost like here, only that our city is much smaller and water temperatures are probably lower already than those in Lake Michigan (around 12°C/54°F) right now.
And temperature differences are not that sharp maybe about 5-6°C on clear mornings from the shore to our suburbs.
If you consider that Lake Michigan is a lake and not a sea, its quite impressing the large temperature variations it can get.

It's a lake, but such a large body of water, it's influence on the regional climate is without question. Especially when the winds are blowing off the "full fetch" (northeast) of the lake.
This was from the summer of 2012. On this particular day. It was 28C on the lakeshore, 33C at the city airports, but 37+ in the suburbs and beyond
On this day the direction of the lake winds cooled the Northshore suburbs most- down to 26C, the city airports were at 34/36C, while the suburbs hit 40C
But the largest differences occur in Spring on a warm days. On this day in March of 2012, it was 18C at the downtown lakeshore, but 29-31C from the city airports to the suburbs.

No lake winds this morning. Temps are uniform across the Chicago metropolitan area. It's around 9C pretty much everywhere this morning. A little colder down here in the south suburbs
