Storm Coverage New Zealand 20-21 June 2013 Two - YouTube
In some areas, notably in Canterbury, the snowfalls were less than expected or predicted. "Worst storm since 1968" is an grossly oversimplified generalisation. By far the most damaging storm in recent years was a summer one in February 2004 which affected the lower 1/3 of the North Island in the main, with exceptional rainfalls and major flooding ion some parts.

This storm hasn't been assessed yet for overall snowfall totals. At Ch'ch the 1992 sea level snowfall exceeds anything that has happened there in this one so far. The only strictly accurate part of the phrase is that sustained windspeeds in Wellington were probably the highest since 1968 - but gust speeds were not.

The media don't do subtle analysis.

Nice. It looks like a ski area base building. Ski areas in the South Island are all east of the main divide. That's because population is closer and the terrain makes access easier. It also means that snowfall is a lot less and much more manageable. The biggest snowfalls for ski areas tend to come when the freezing level is around 1000 metres. I will get some good snow photos this winter.

Little wind here from the storm, even though Wellington is only 130 km SW of here. The top gust was 43 k/h (25 mph)

A bleak day today. 4C/40F and steady light rain at 11.05 am

I think you mean ESE rather than SW!

That Hutt shot reminds me that a year or so back skiers were trapped on the mountain there for a while, with NW winds gusting to over 200kph. Probably didn't do the snow pack a lot of good.

Ooops.... must be the hangover. ESE it is.

"Wind packed powder" is one of those euphemisms used by the ski industry, so as not to scare people off.

Cool thanks. I look forward to those photos.

Here's a very neat timeline of the events unfolding. Video at 1:40 shows an incredible image of someone trying to walk through whiteout conditions.

Looking at 3C lows here tonight and tomorrow night. Current temps across Melbourne metro area at 11:30pm range from -2.0C to 7.3C
Our outside weather station recorded a maximum of 15.5C, but I would believe that city's 13.6C reading. It was a rather unusual occurrence. In fact the 8th coldest maximum on record, well at least as far back as 1 Jan 1955.

Coldest days in terms of maximums, in ascending order of "warmth":

Day Maximum Temp (C)
20-Jul-1965 11.0
27-Jul-2000 11.8
11-Jul-1956 12.8
09-Jun-2011 12.9
04-Jul-1984 13.0
09-Aug-1978 13.2
25-Jun-1965 13.4
21-Jun-2013 13.6

Thankfully usual Brisbane winter services have qiuckly returned. 20C max today and blue dome. It feels somewhat toasty in the sun!

Still a grim day here, but the temp has crept up to 5C/42F and with a light drizzle at 4.30 pm.

Some winter photos. The first shows the snow behind the house at about 700m/2100ft. It gets to this level 5-10 times a winter. The next shows Nelson with snow to about 400-500m/2000ft - once or twice a winter. The third photo shows the Southerly clearance.

It's been a grotesque month for both of us but I think you'll claw back some of the sunshine deficit. We may do that to a lesser extent but I expect the monthly total to be much below average even in the best scenario. Rainfall in both places high, especially yours.
