Winter. Temps dropping here 10 degrees in past couple hours. Cold front coming through. Rain changes to snow later tonight. Loving the radar but hoping everyone down south copes with it ok. Some will be without power for a week.

Keep in mind, its staying cold with the power outages so melting and warmth isn't around for them

A look at Temps across the U.S and metars. The reds in the plains indicated the bleeding of the Arctic. Light blues are crazy. Freezing line down to San Antonio.

Crazy forecast here.

1.84" of snow on 12/8, followed by warmer weather and rain on 12/9. Rain changes back into snow overnight on 12/9, and snow showers in the morning hours of 9/10. Total snowfall expected to be 2.4", however accumulation will be limited to 0.7" thanks to the rains .

Thankfully, average cold is predicted to settle in mid January. Highs in the 30's F and lows in the upper teens. However, all this news about an arctic blast hitting the nation is joke for the northeast since high temperatures fail to drop below 30 F.

A true arctic blast should usher in temperatures 15-20 F below average. That means highs in the low 20's F and single digit lows for January. Anything warmer is not an arctic blast. Hopefully things come back with a vengeance in March when highs fail to cross 30 F for a week straight.

There's been tons of cold air and arctic blasts for the past year, it's just that all of it has been confined to the deep interior. The West Coast has occasionally gotten in on the action, though, so there is hope for the other coasts too . I do agree with you that this is not an arctic blast for the Northeast; for the most part the real cold isn't penetrating east of the Mississippi, let alone east of the Appalachians.

Also, you may not have to wait until March to get an East Coast arctic blast. The weather beyond Christmas is virtually unknown, so that leaves January and February as possibilities in addition to March.

EDIT: Maybe some sea ice around the coast would help get your temperatures down . Maybe we could import some cold air from Greenland and put it over the water.

Rain streaming in? That's autumn, buster. Winter is when you see snow streaming in directly with no rainfall in sight for at least a week .

Hmm...it looks better when it's obscured .

The accuracy rate for those weeklies is pretty weak. On November 8 the long range had the entire country mild and dry for Thanksgiving week, but the end result was tremendous cold and storminess. Even as late as November 15, Brett Anderson still had Thanksgiving week marked as "seasonable". Now, we certainly could see a flip to a milder pattern around Christmas, but, at least recently, depending on the weeklies this far out has been little better than rolling dice.

I really wanted a shot of the Empire State Building, but I couldn't even see the base of it, and I was only a few blocks away.

The weather channel is calling the recent Extratropical storm that hit Britain as Windstorm Xaver

One of the most dangerous storms in 60 years to strike the U.K. and parts of Europe is bringing hurricane-force winds along with major storm-surge flooding from Scotland to Denmark. The storm has the potential to cause upward of $1 billion in damage and has already caused fatalities in the U.K., where winds of greater than 100 mph have uprooted trees, knocked over power lines, and pushed a surge of water on the eastern shore of the country.

The agency added: "Significant flooding along the east coast of England is expected to continue today [Friday], as the most serious coastal tidal surge for over 60 years will continue to affect communities."

With the numbing cold hitting much of the country, I am really surprised to see that after the passage of the front, Philly will not be anywhere near as cold as places much further south and west, like Little Rock, AR or Dallas. Our coldest NOAA forecasted day is next Thursday morning with a low of 20F. Temps moderate after that according to longer range forecasts. No ice days predicted yet for here, and no snow depths or snow cover.

Thank God for the Atlantic Ocean.
