Not really great weather in the far North though - windy, wet and cloudy. It might have the warmest minimums, but that's about it's only advantage. I think there are many places further south, with better climates.
Somewhere in the Napier area, or perhaps Nelson/Marlborough (the sunnier parts thereof).

Alexandra in the south island has the hotter summers and drier weather overall, although the winters are cool.
Definitely Ogulin for its central position, great natural and historical features and a climate quite better than Zagreb, with much more precipitation and cooler summers.
