Hey guys, my question is are there 2 places within close proximity to each that are vastly different in temperature? Like <5km or closer? If so what is the greatest difference in temp?
I'm guessing along the Californian coast.. although it is probably more like at least 20km or so to get away from the moderating affects of the pacific. I'd guess it is probably a similar story in Morocco and other places in northern and north west Africa.. Casablanca is fairly moderate in summer, inland another 20km or so it is probably 5C hotter in summer
the first i can think of is in LA region, the coast, LA Metro, Valleys
all the same during winter upper upper 60s/low 70s
spring: Coast low to mid 70s, LA Metro low 80s, valleys mid 80s
summer: Coast upper 70s/low 80s, LA Metro low 90s, Valleys upper 90s to low 100s
Fall: Coast mid 70s, LA Metro mid to low 80s, Valleys mid to low 80s
so during summer it can be a 10 degree difference form one place to the other (LA Metro to Valleys, LA Metro to Coast), or 20 degrees (Coast to Valleys).
I've thought of starting a thread by this same topic. Instead, I was going to ask about the temperature gradient. ie. greatest degrees per km. Additionally, I would like to explore the idea of precipitation increase/ km. The two places would have to be at about the same elevation.
For precipitation, going from Lytton, BC, downriver to Boston Bar a mere 40 km away increases the precipitation 250%. Travelling down to Hope (100 km from Lytton) results in a 500+% increase. This is more than a 20 mm increase in precipitation per km. ie. more than an inch per mile.
For proportional differences in sunshine hours within a small distance the California coast would probably come top again, but if you go no more than 25 miles east of Bradford (1264 hours a year) you get Church Fenton (1574 hours). Church Fenton is on the leeward side of the Pennines so you would naturally expect it to be a bit sunnier, but given the topography between the two places isn't all that dramatic I've never quite understood why the difference is as much as it is, presuming the Bradford observation site doesn't underread or Church Fention overread for whatever reason.
