I actually live in Campbell, CA which is right next to San Jose (I say my hometown as San Jose on here cuz it's actually fairly well known). Campbell's microlimate has slightly warmer summer daytime highs and colder nighttime lows than San Jose. Winter temperatures are about the same but Campbell gets about 1.5 times as much rain per year as downtown SJ. Here are the stats.
Campbell, CA wins hands down. I may call my climate "boring" but at least we have a lot of sunshine and the contrast of sunny, warm to hot summer days and cooler, much cloudier winters that are an even balance of days with rain, just plain cloudy days, and sunny days with some crisp frosty mornings that turn into warmish afternoons. Comfortable swimming weather in summer and good walking weather year round (except for afternoons during heat waves but even the hottest days have pleasant mornings and tolerable late evenings). The downfalls are no snow and only maybe one or two thunderstorms a year and bone dry summers (and this year a bone dry winter as well).
Campbell Island, NZ is a maritime puke hole with literally almost no sunshine. The only advantage it has over Campbell, CA is some snow accumulation in winter (which is probably melted away by the cold drizzly rain that dominates year round). No summers, no sunny and warm weather ever, no clear crisp winter days, no thunderstorms, nothing but maritime gloom, constant wind, drizzly, foggy puke all year round. It's actually even more boring than San Diego and not even any pleasant outdoor weather to compensate for the boredom.
My guess is that Siberian High and PatriciusMaximus will pick Campbell Island though.

I suppose Koeppen overlooked the existence of such locations. I prefer the island, although it earns only a C-/D+ for the gloom, boom, and doom as well as the anemic summers. This is compared to the automatic F given to the rainless-summer variant of the Csa climate found in much of California; SF would earn a D. Not a landslide for the NZ island by any account.
Campbell Island has some spectacular scenery! Campbell, CA has palm trees, I guess? I like palm trees. But I'm still quite tempted to go with Campbell Island, as I would find the temperatures better for outdoor activities, but I imagine growing tired of it after a while. CA is just too sunny and dry. The winters in Cambell, CA look nice, but the summers are too hot. I don't care that it's dry heat -- it's the sun that bothers me more than humidity anyway.

Cooler microclimates in summer here are a very short drive away- 20 minutes to average highs in the upper 70s, 40 minutes to average highs in the low 70s, and an hour to highs in the mid 60s with fog. The only way out of the maritime puke of Campbell Island is by boat or plane.
However, I would still take Maritime Puke over a year round HOT dessert like Mecca or extreme winter like Oymyakon though.
On very short time scales Campbell Is has had some reasonably sunny spells, relative to its overall extreme cloudiness - its record 7-day total is 69 hours, 14-day 99 hours. On the other hand there was a 90-day spell in 1992 - starting late April - which had a total of only 8.7 hours. The 325 days with 0.2mm or more rain and 245 with 1.0mm or more don't add a lot to the joy. Lowest annual total sun was 479 hours, highest 843.

Campbell, CA has nice scenery not far away. The best redwoods outside the far northern part of the state are there. And some small mountains. And in pretty hillsides:
