Well here is an interesting tidbit from the past.

In the summer of 1980, DC had a record of 59 days with temps of 90F or higher. And guess what?

January of 1981 was over 3F below normal.

Just shows how quick the change can happen. In that summer of 1980 July, August and Sept were above average (August and Sept were well above), October was average and then Nov, Dec and Jan were below average with Jan well below average.

So I know the coldies are just jumping for joy with all this cold, you just never know when it can flip.

And I live in a place where the snowpack melts after few days. Lol. Since weather is so boring this week I'm glad this event is happening. :-)

From NWS Montana.

Snow levels currently ranging
from around 3000 feet near the Canadian border to 7000 feet over
central MT will remain near these levels through Wednesday morning
then gradually lower Wednesday afternoon and evening, allowing a
mix/change to snow over the plains of north central MT as well as
over the passes south and west of Helena in central MT. There is
still some uncertainty with precipitation amounts and how much snow
can accumulate at lower elevations.

This is nuts... I remember last year snow fell in central Wyoming at the "end" of September and everyone was shocked because it was early and leaves were still on the trees... Now here we are beginning of September and snow is flying again.. Might not reach central Wyoming but just amazing! Watches into South Dakota too now.

Another tid bit I got...

Great Falls Montana normal first snow accumulation of more than a trace is October 13th!!

They are right on the edge of the 850mb freezing line and getting rain right now... As soon as temps drop a little more it will change... Forecast down below.

Last time this early was 1992. Not common for this early.

Not too alarming really considering it is Montana/Wyoming/South Dakota, etc.

Now if we begin seeing early-mid September snow in places like Memphis, it's time to panic!
