You pretty much described Sydney's climate (when it comes to rain) in a nutshell.

I can usually tell, even without looking at the weather map, when CA is getting some rain, at least in winter, as here, in Las Vegas, we get the trailings. And if the rain doesn't reach the Valley floor, then we've got our snow-capped Spring Mountains to look at afterwards, which can remain snow-capped until May!

Here on the North Coast we've had pretty significant rain for most of the past week with a bit of sunshine here and there to dry things out a bit. They're calling for more rain through the weekend and into next week so things are starting to look a bit more normal around here.

Last I saw on NOAA the Eureka area is over 100% of normal rainfall totals for the season so far.
Are the hillsides green there yet?

For that particular day. Early December is just the beginning of the rainy season. It's not unusual to get more than an inch, or two inches, of rain in a single day as winter goes on.

San Diego got nearly 2 inches of rain within a few hours after a brief thunderstorm. That might not sound like much but for a climate that only gets 10 inches of rain a year, mostly in the form of light showers, it's quite a feat. Looks like California might be heading into a "wet" epoch. Weather History for San Diego, CA | Weather Underground
