Who wants to be mentally well if it involves living in some boring, dung-ridden hellhole, full of rednecks and moonshine drinkers? Not to mention rural dwellers tend to be fat, lazy and poorly dressed, and appear to harbour an inordinate amount of religious zealots and Christian fundamentalists. I'd rather spend my time socialising with interesting people in Boston or San Francisco than bumping shoulders with pondlife in the swamps of Louisiana.
Well, rural America anyway - which seems downright scary.
That seems to be more of an issue in the rural South than elsewhere. If I were to choose a state to live in a rural area it would have to be Vermont or Minnesota. Both very liberal, have 4 good seasons, among the top ranks in terms of education and most fit states. Lots of outdoor recreational opportunities and not to mention beautiful scenery.
Do you really think all of rural America is like that? Or do you like tossing stereotypes for fun?
No, I don't. I was exaggerating - I don't know what it's like beyond the stereotypes, though I can imagine what it's like based on certain data. Rural states like Vermont seem nice, and tend to be liberal and keen on fitness, whereas West Virginia and North Dakota are the opposite, and I'd avoid those areas if I visited the US.

He seems to be describing the rural Mississippi Delta country (nicknamed by a lot of people as the anus of America). The areas on the Mississippi in MS, LA, and AR. Those places are ****holes for real, but everywhere else or at least 90% of everywhere else sure as hell isn't like that. Of course, you'll have your rural ****hole elsewhere but I think that can apply to any country, not just the US.
Lots of rural Florida is pretty crappy. Lots of crime, poverty and drugs in those swampy, backwater towns. Also very hot and conservative. I prefer Miami to those places (in a social point of view).
I much prefer city living, having everything around me is more convenient & I love being within walking distance of shops, bars etc... I think it's because where I grew up was the sub-urban limits of the Portsmouth area, within walking distance of my house were fields & many people from Portsmouth itself would refer to where I lived as rural... As soon as I left home I moved into the city & I would LOVE to live in London, I just love the hustle & bustle a& all the things to do see...

Well lay down & get off the ****ing internet then
I actually spent part of my childhood on a farm on the outskirts of Leeds. I enjoyed it at the time, being a young child. Me and my sister used to ride the horses, which was always fun. My sister actually got a few ribbons for horse riding.
We moved to a suburban area of Leeds when I was about 8, and when I was 19 I left home and didn't really look back - and I've been enjoying city living ever since. The area I live in right now is still too suburban for my tastes, so I'm looking at some apartments in the inner city areas. City centre is very expensive - and I'm trying to save up so I can put a deposit on a flat in the near future.
