Here's NCEP reanalysis of the same day, which is probably the source Meteociel is using. Plot shape is a bit easier to read:

Well, from the looks of the 850 mb temps from all of the January days, it does look like there was some colder air focused there from Jan 14-27th. The coldest 850mb temps happened solely on the 20th (~245K = -28C), and all other days were significantly warmer. This is consistent with the NOAA data for Rogers' Pass that month, so I'm now somewhat willing to believe that a strong temperature inversion was possible on that night only, in a decent frost hollow.
Waiting on damn wake county. Every County around us made their decison. Some delayed 2 hours and just now one of the counties changed the delay to a closure for schools. Now I'm waiting for wake County to say something. Last year these fools did not make a decision till 7 am in the morning. By then it was too late many kids were on the buses half way to school and then they turned straight back to home. At least it counted as a full day of school so did not have to make it up.
Not a bad drive home this afternoon, despite the snow. Fewer cars on the road, so that's always good. As I often feel inclined to during snowstorms, I have having a beer right now.
