Affordable housing is a big thing here too, and there's very little of it being built. It's even more outrageous when you think of poor people in places like London being moved further afield so their social housing can be demolished to make way for yuppie apartment blocks.

Sad state of affairs.
The exact same thing is happening in our nation's capital. I'm curious as to what would happen once they've driven out all the workers that make the city run - the janitors, the food-service workers, the cops and firemen and sanitation workers - and there's nobody around to do those jobs.
I guess all them high-paid guvmint people are just gonna have to fend for themselves...lol.
Ha, the city of Oxford here has that exact problem - many of the nurses, the firemen and other public workers can't afford to live there, and the city can't recruit new people because it's too expensive.
Dinky little 50 year old tract houses are being sold for over $1.5 million USD in the San Franciscco Bay Area, with people entering into bidding wars. My daughter & her spouse are tech professionals & work very hard, but I wonder when they will be able to afford a house. They are in a very over-priced apartment in a crowded, noisy complex & tired of it.

Guess they'll have to leave San Francisco. Many people in London leave in their 30s because they get tired of the high prices.
Where do ppl in London find comparable employment if they have to leave? The problem with the work that they do is that it is pretty much centralized in the Bay Area/Silicon Valley of Northern California in the USA...ppl from all over the world go there & stay, hence the prices
They commute to London. An annual railway ticket might cost over £1,000 a year but that's still way cheaper than monthly rent. It depends on how much cheaper houses are once you leave San Francisco, and whether the added cost of driving/rail is cheaper than the cost of rent.
That sounds pretty reasonable for an annual pass. How long is the average commute, time/distance? People do commute in the Bay Area/ Silicon Valley, but are going farther & farther out, & many still are using cars, as the rail transit isn't adequate.
