I've lived in this region half my life, and have consistently paid attention to LA and SD SST's, most years I found were in the ranges I mentioned, and north of Pacific Palisades, SST drops quite a bit, Oxnard SST is usually 5 degrees cooler than Seal Beach

Now you know why the Med in Europe is so much better beach wise. I was swimming in 75F water in Barcelona in September one year. How many years is that possible in San Diego?

Last September, SST hit 80F in San Diego, warmer than Barcelona!
Barcelona gets colder than San Diego in winter as does almost all of the Med.
Australia has by far the best med climates and next is South Africa (Durban).
Warm Epoch San Diego is on par with both of them but it was too short lived.

I doubt it.
I've just looked at , where the sea temperatures for San Diego are measured.

Station Home Page - NOAA Tides & Currents
It is located in "San Diego Bay", which surely warms up much more than the open ocean.

The problem is that there seem to be no beaches in San Diego Bay. All the beaches are facing the (cooler) open sea.

Compare the current Sea Temp that San Diego Bay gets to other places in the same area:
https://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/spac.html

Those two charts show SST averages taken from satellite measurements by the NOAA.

San Diego Bay averages 72°F in the warmest period, being the place with the warmest Summer SSTs in SoCal. It's warmer than the open coast where the beaches are.

Edit: Durban is not a Mediterranean Climate, it's a Humid Subtropical Climate.
Those areas in South Africas with Med Climates have very cold SSTs .

Last summer, Mission Beach (on the direct ocean) hit 80F briefy for a few hours in September and was mostly between 73-77F in August and September. Right now, it's at 62F (horrible) and 58F on Scripps Pier (the same Pier that hit 78F last summer!). Anyway, most summers do have bouts of low 70s in the open ocean in August and September unless you get a strong La Nina like in 2010.

Speaking of SSTs, it's currently 69F in Bastia. Also passed the 20C mark here. Gonna hit the beach tonight!

As for the poll, Buffalo obviously. Wondering how warm lake Ontario gets? Shame it's much deeper than lake Erie.

Water temp in Lake Ontario off the Rochester beaches tops out around 73°F/22.8°C most summers and usually by early August, at this time, the water temp is probably around 60°F/15.6°C

Buffalo is great from September through early November, as well as May-June.

May-Sept were the only acceptable months in Upstate NY to this former native, who left for warmer climes.

October is only acceptable in warmer than avg years, like 2000. I remember getting frost bite trick or treating as a kid one year, no joke.
