It's a good threshold for the aim of this thread. Even if a climate does get snow, when it melts each and every day it feels pointless. The last several winters have been much warmer than normal here and it's just a pain when it melts all the time. A good stable snowpack is what makes a winter "real" and that needs sub-freezing highs.

For people saying 10°C is real winter, please. It was 7°C here this morning.

11 C as an average high in January would certainly feel distinctly winter like after a 40 C average high summer.

Some of our winters have had little or no snow and yet the temperatures could be in the minus 20 or 30 C for weeks on end. If the 0C temperature for one month in the winter is the basis for winter then where I live would have winter every year, though this past winter might have a bit a problem with that as we had a warm dry winter and have had mostly a cooler than normal wetter summer. Normally two to four months would qualify for a winter based on the temperature.

We can also have -40C as a low in the winter and plus 40 for a high in the summer. We can also have -20 and +20 in a two day period.

Yeah - so some people might say you don't have a real summer because it can get cold there all year.

It's stupid - there is no such thing as a 'real' winter or 'real' summer - it's all relative to where you live and what you're used to.

Maybe real is the wrong word to use but having a snowpack vs not having one is a pretty obvious dividing line. People of Rio de Janeiro call anything below 21°C frigid. Should we now consider this cold and wintry not to hurt their feelings? In the context of this thread a line has to be drawn and it's not 10°C T-shirt weather.

Does anyone know the definition of winter? It's the time of year with the coolest temps and shortest days not when the temperature is below X degrees. Therefore everywhere has a winter and terms like real winter or true winter are pointless-everywhere has them except somewhere Equatorial.
